For many Americans, the song represents hope, gratitude, and love of country. Yet few people know the remarkable story behind its creation—or the extraordinary man who wrote it.

An Immigrant’s Love Letter to America

Irving Berlin was born Israel Beilin in 1888 in what is now Belarus. As a young Jewish child, he fled with his family to escape the violent anti-Jewish pogroms that devastated the village of Tolochin in the Russian Empire. Seeking safety and a better future, the family immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York City with little more than hope for a new beginning.

Growing up in poverty on New York City's Lower East Side, Berlin—a surname he adopted after a printer misspelled his original family name, Beilin—worked a series of odd jobs before becoming one of America's greatest songwriters.

Although he never learned to read music fluently, he composed more than 1,500 songs, including classics such as White Christmas, Easter Parade, and There’s No Business Like Show Business.

His life embodied the American dream, making his patriotic music especially meaningful.

Written During World War I

Many people believe God Bless America was written in 1938, but its story actually began twenty years earlier.

In 1918, while serving in the U.S. Army during World War I, Berlin wrote the song for a military stage production called Yip, Yip, Yaphank. After hearing it performed, however, he decided it was too solemn for the lighthearted musical and set it aside, leaving it unpublished.

A Song Reborn

Twenty years later, Europe stood on the brink of another devastating war.

Returning from a trip to London in 1938, Berlin watched with growing concern as international tensions escalated. Wanting to express gratitude for his adopted homeland—not promote war—he remembered the forgotten song tucked away in his files.

He carefully rewrote the lyrics, changing several lines to emphasize peace rather than military victory. One notable revision changed “guide her to the right” to “guide her through the night,” removing any unintended political meaning and creating the version millions know today.

Kate Smith Introduces a Classic

On November 10, 1938, singer Kate Smith introduced God Bless America during her national radio broadcast in honor of Armistice Day.

The response was immediate.

Listeners flooded radio stations with praise, newspapers celebrated the song, and it quickly became one of America’s most beloved patriotic anthems. Although never intended to replace The Star-Spangled Banner, it gradually became an unofficial national hymn sung during times of celebration, remembrance, and national unity.

A Gift to Future Generations

Irving Berlin never sought to profit personally from the song’s popularity.

Instead, he established the God Bless America Fund, donating royalties from the song to benefit the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Over the decades, millions of dollars generated by the song have supported youth programs across the country.

More Than a Patriotic Song

Berlin often explained that God Bless America was not intended as a military anthem or a political statement.

He called it simply “a patriotic song”—one that anyone could sing regardless of background or beliefs. For a man who had arrived in America as a poor immigrant seeking safety and opportunity, the song was a heartfelt expression of gratitude to the country that had given him a new beginning.

More than eighty years after its debut, God Bless America continues to remind us that patriotism can be expressed not only through pride, but also through hope, gratitude, and a shared love for the ideals that unite a nation.

As an immigrant myself, I deeply relate to Irving Berlin's story. I arrived in the United States as a stateless refugee after escaping the Soviet Union, carrying little more than hope for a new beginning. Like Berlin, I understand the profound gratitude an immigrant feels toward a country that offers freedom, opportunity, and a chance to rebuild a life.

On March 15, 1990, I arrived in New York City alone with two suitcases and refugee status. I spoke no English and had no certainty about what the future would bring. Everything familiar was left behind—my homeland, my language, my friends, my memories, and the life I had once known.

I arrived not with wealth or connections, but with hope, determination, and the belief that somewhere beyond fear and uncertainty, a different life was possible.

I settled in Buffalo, NY, where the season’s first snowfall usually arrives in November, and the last snowfall typically happens in April or May.

America felt overwhelming—not for days, not for months—for years!

The city moved fast, the language sounded unfamiliar, and even simple everyday tasks could feel intimidating. I had to learn everything from the beginning—how to navigate a new culture, build a new life, and find my place in a world that often felt enormous and indifferent.

There were moments of loneliness and exhaustion. Moments when I questioned myself and wondered whether I had made the right decision. Starting over from nothing is never easy, especially in a foreign country where every step forward requires courage.

But there was also something else: freedom.

For the first time, I felt that my future was no longer limited by the invisible barriers I had known for so much of my life. In America, hard work, persistence, and determination could open doors that once seemed permanently closed.

Those two suitcases carried far more than clothing and personal belongings. They carried memories, survival, loss, resilience, and dreams for a better future.

Like millions of immigrants before me, I came searching not only for safety, but for possibility—the possibility to live freely, to build a future, and to create a life shaped by my own choices.

The journey was not easy, and the road ahead would bring many more challenges. But March 15, 1990, became the day everything changed—the day one life ended and another began.

The two halves of my life were so dramatically different that I called them “my first life” and “my second life”.

It was thirty-six years ago. Throughout these years I measured my progress in small victories others might never notice.

Eventually, I moved out of Buffalo, NY. I got a professional job, I built my life, and retired in sunny Florida. I wrote a memoir about my life journey.

America proved to me that this is a Land of Opportunity! I learned that with determination and hard work, you can reach your dreams.

Today, in the era of “making America great again”, our country is drastically changing, and not for the better. With each passing day, the systems that have guided this nation for nearly 250 years—designed to protect democracy and guard against authoritarianism—are coming under increasing strain.

The cruelty in the treatments of immigrants and even American citizens is astounded. Our new policies reduce people to numbers and inhumanity.

It gives me a suffocating feeling — the sense that I can no longer breathe freely here and want to be somewhere else.

That is the feeling I once had in the Soviet Union. And now I feel it here.

For twenty years, the Kyzylkum Desert was not just a place on the map—it was my home, my challenge, and my silent teacher.

The Kyzylkum, known as the “Red Desert,” stretches unforgivingly across Central Asia.

Arid. Demanding. Seemingly endless. But crossed by those who are desperate for something better.

Summers were brutally hot, with the sun pressing down like a heavy hand, while winters could be bitterly cold, with sharp winds sweeping across the empty land. Life there was not easy. It demanded endurance, patience, and the ability to adapt.

When I first arrived, it felt like stepping onto another planet. The landscape was so different from the green streets of Ukraine I had known. There were no tree-lined boulevards, no familiar rivers, no comforting sense of home. Instead, there was open sky, endless sand, dry air, and silence—so much silence that it could feel louder than noise.

That silence became part of life. It forced reflection. It taught me how strong a person can become when there is no choice but to keep going.

Living there for two decades meant learning survival in every sense—not only physical survival in a harsh environment, but emotional survival as well. It meant raising a family, building a life, finding purpose, and holding on to hope even when the future felt uncertain and unbearable.

The desert strips life down to essentials. You learn quickly what truly matters: family, dignity, resilience, friendship, and the courage to move forward. Comfort becomes less important than strength. Possessions matter less than perseverance.

Yet the Kyzylkum was not the only hardship. It had its own strange beauty—the endless sunsets painting the sky in impossible colors, stars so bright they seemed close enough to touch, rare spring flowers blooming against the harsh landscape, camels and wild creatures living in close proximity, and the deep understanding that life, even in the harshest places, continues to bloom.

Those twenty years shaped me profoundly.

The desert taught me discipline, humility, and survival. It prepared me for every journey that came after—for Austria, Italy, America, and the life I would continue to build.

People often think of deserts as empty places. But for me, the Kyzylkum was full—full of lessons, experiences—bad and good, memories, pain, strength, and transformation.

Its silence still lives inside me.

Long before the world ever heard the name Obama, there was a curious young woman named Stanley Ann Dunham.

She was born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1942. Her family moved often, but she grew up mostly in Mercer Island, Washington, where she graduated from high school in 1960. Her classmates remembered her as the girl who questioned everything. She challenged teachers. She challenged norms. She challenged the idea that a girl’s life was supposed to look like everyone else’s.

At 18, while studying at the University of Hawaii, she fell in love with a Kenyan student named Barack Obama Sr. They married. She gave birth to a baby boy in Honolulu in August 1961 and named him after his father.

Most people would have stopped dreaming right there.

Ann was just beginning.

When her first marriage ended, she later married an Indonesian man named Lolo Soetoro, and in 1967 she moved to Jakarta with her 6-year-old son. Life in Indonesia was not easy. The country was poor. The language was new. The culture was foreign. Most young American mothers in her position would have been overwhelmed.

Ann fell in love with the place instead.

She enrolled in graduate school in anthropology and began walking straight into the villages that most development experts only studied from a distance. She sat beside blacksmiths at their forges in Javanese villages. She spent hours with women at their looms, watching them weave. She listened to mothers explain how they fed their families on almost nothing. She wrote it all down in notebooks that would one day fill a university archive.

And slowly, something important started forming in her mind.

At that time, the prevailing idea in global development was that poor countries stayed poor because of their “culture.” Lazy traditions. Bad habits. Backward thinking. It was a cruel and lazy theory, but it was everywhere.

Ann looked at the people around her and saw the opposite.

She saw brilliant craftsmen who had been perfecting their trade for 1,200 years. She saw women running tiny businesses with astonishing discipline. She saw communities full of skill, intelligence, and effort. What they lacked was not character. What they lacked was capital. A small loan. A little trust. A fair chance.

So she spent the rest of her life trying to give it to them.

She joined the Ford Foundation in Jakarta and became their program officer for women and employment. She consulted for USAID. She worked in Pakistan with the Agricultural Development Bank. She spent years with Bank Rakyat Indonesia, helping to shape what would grow into one of the largest microfinance systems in the world. Tiny loans to rural women. Tiny loans to farmers. Tiny loans to weavers and blacksmiths and fish sellers. Loans that most banks thought were too small to bother with.

Those tiny loans changed millions of lives.

Women who had never held cash of their own started small businesses. They paid for their children’s schools. They built up savings. They broke cycles of poverty that had lasted generations.

In 1992, at the age of 49, after 14 years of field research, Ann finally earned her PhD in anthropology. Her dissertation was over 1,000 pages long. One anthropologist called it a classic.

She also raised two extraordinary children. Barack, and his younger sister Maya, born in Jakarta in 1970.

In 1994, while working in Indonesia, Ann started to feel unwell. She returned to the United States and was diagnosed with cancer. She fought it for over a year. On November 7, 1995, just before her 53rd birthday, she passed away in Honolulu.

She did not live to see what happened next.

She did not live to see her son become a United States senator. She did not live to see him give the speech that made a nation pause. She did not live to see him win the presidency in 2008, or be sworn in as the 44th president of the United States.

But every value he carried into that office was hers.

The belief that every person deserves dignity. The belief that poverty is not a character flaw but a circumstance. The belief that small, steady, quiet work adds up to enormous change. The belief that the world gets better one village, one woman, one loan, one opportunity at a time.

Ann Dunham never sought fame. She sought understanding. She sought usefulness. She sought to be of service to the people most of the world had learned to ignore.

Some legacies are loud. Others, like hers, change the world quietly from a workshop in Java, one weaver and one blacksmith and one small loan at a time.

And sometimes, just sometimes, the quiet ones raise the people who will one day stand in front of the entire world and remind it of the lessons their mothers taught them long ago.

I was born and raised in Ukraine during the Soviet era, in a world shaped by discipline, endurance, and quiet resilience.

Every spring, when the cherry blossoms begin to bloom, my mind wanders back to Vinnytsia—the city where I was born. It is a place known for its cozy, tree-lined streets, the peaceful Southern Bug River, and the famous trams that give the city its distinct charm. I spent my first twelve years there.

My childhood was a complex mosaic. Life was certainly not easy, and the shadow of antisemitism was a heavy, painful reality we had to navigate. Yet, in our neighborhood, Jewish and Ukrainian families lived side by side. My childhood friend, Natasha, came from a Ukrainian family, and our bond transcended the divisions around us. We were simply two children sharing the same world.

Our friendship lasted throughout life. The last time I communicated with her was on the first day of the war—February 24, 2022—when Russia launched its massive full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I still do not know where she and her family are now, and that uncertainty fills me with deep sadness.

Vinnytsia is part of my DNA. It gave me a front-row seat to both the cruelty of the world and the extraordinary grace of friendship.

After several years spent in Belarus, my path led me to Kyiv, where I attended college. Kyiv felt like another world—larger, faster, and full of history and ambition. As the capital of Ukraine, it carried a different energy: grand boulevards lined with chestnut trees, historic cathedrals, crowded streets, and a constant feeling that life was moving forward.

My existence in the college dormitory, with very little money, was challenging. But the city inspired curiosity, independence, and a stronger desire to shape my own future.

Ukraine was also a land of deep traditions and rich culture.

The changing seasons marked the rhythm of life—snowy winters, blooming springs, golden summers, and long autumn evenings.

Those early years in Vinnytsia and Kyiv gave me my first day of school, my first friendship, my first boyfriend, and shaped the woman I would become.

Long before the deserts of Uzbekistan, before Austria, Italy, and America—there was Ukraine.

It was the beginning of everything.

There were roots, memories, hardships, and lessons that would travel with me forever.

Seeing Ukraine now being bombed, its people killed or living through immense suffering, and its beautiful cities being destroyed by Russians for more than four years makes my heart cry.

She wasn't posing for history. She was just trying to get her children to the other side.
It was September 1965, in the coastal lowlands of South Vietnam. A mother — her name never recorded by the world — waded into a river with her four children clinging to her body. The U.S. Air Force had ordered everyone out of their village near Qui Nhon. Vietcong fighters had been using the surrounding area to fire on American Marines, and now the bombs were coming. She had no time to pack, no time to plan. She had only her children and the water in front of her.

A young Japanese photojournalist named Kyoichi Sawada was there that day.
Sawada had begged his editors at United Press International for months to send him to Vietnam. They kept saying no — it was an American conflict, not his to cover. So in early 1965, he used his own vacation time and flew there himself, camera in hand, on his own money. His photographs were so powerful that UPI finally relented and gave him the assignment.

That single image — a mother, chest-deep in water, four small children wrapped around her — stopped the world.

It was titled Flight to Safety. It went on to win the 1965 World Press Photo of the Year. It earned Sawada the Pulitzer Prize for Photography. It swept the Overseas Press Club Award and the US Camera Achievement Award — all in the same year. Critics called him the finest, most daring photographer working in Indochina.

But here is the part that history almost forgot.

After the awards ceremonies, after the applause, after the recognition that would have satisfied most — Sawada went looking for her. He searched through villages disrupted by war, through communities scattered by conflict, until he found not just the mother and her children, but the second family that had also been captured in the frame. He found both families.

And he gave them every cent of the prize money.

Not a portion. All of it.

He also made sure each family received a copy of the photograph — so that the woman who had waded through that river with terror in her chest could hold, in her own hands, the image that had moved the entire world.

He never spoke publicly about it as an act of generosity. To Sawada, it simply wasn't his story to keep.

He understood something that many forget: behind every iconic image is a real human being who never asked to become a symbol. The mother in that river wasn't representing a cause. She was saving her children. The least the world could do — the least he could do — was make sure she knew her struggle had been witnessed with dignity, not just documented for acclaim.

Sawada kept working. He kept going back to the front lines — to Vietnam, to the Battle of Hue, to the places other photographers hesitated to enter. Those who knew him described a quiet contradiction: a man so daring that he once ran through a minefield for a photograph, yet so careful that he never removed his helmet in the field.

In October 1970, while traveling toward Kirrirom Pass in Cambodia, his car was ambushed. He was 34 years old.

He left behind no famous last words. Only photographs — and a legacy of quiet integrity that stands apart from almost anyone else in the history of war photography.
Most people who pick up a camera want to capture the world.

Kyoichi Sawada captured it — and then tried, in whatever small way he could, to give something back to the people inside the frame.

The mother crossed the river to save her children. Sawada crossed something harder — the distance between observer and human being.

Not everyone with a camera remembers that behind every photograph, there is still a life being lived.

He never forgot.

I didn’t leave my country. I lost it.

It was thirty-six years ago.

And then, just a few weeks ago, a man at the gym casually told me, “You should be deported to Russia,” after a disagreement over his behavior. It was the first time I had heard words like that in thirty-six years.

I have never lived in Russia. I lived in the Soviet Union—a country that no longer exists. But the man didn’t know the difference. To him, it was all the same.

In that moment, he wasn’t just one ignorant individual. He represented something larger—an America that has forgotten how to see clearly, to understand, or even to care about the difference.

I have this suffocating feeling for a while — the sense that you can no longer breathe freely here and want to be somewhere else.

That is the feeling I once had in the Soviet Union. And now I feel it here.

One day, I belonged somewhere. I had a language, a system, a place in the world that—however imperfect—was mine. The next, I was in transit, moving through countries that were never meant to keep me, carrying documents that did not quite prove I existed.

People often speak about immigration as a decision, a journey, even an act of courage. But there is another version—quieter, less understood—where the ground disappears beneath you before you have chosen to move at all.

I was raised in the Soviet Union, in a world defined by structure and limitation. There were rules for everything: what could be said, what could be imagined, what kind of future was possible. Freedom, as Americans understand it, did not exist. And yet, there was a kind of certainty in that life—a sense of place that required no explanation. You belonged because you were born there.

When that system began to collapse, it did not do so cleanly. It unraveled people’s lives along with its institutions. For some, it opened doors. For others, it erased the very idea of home.

I became one of those people with erased the very idea of home.

To be stateless is not just a legal condition—it is a psychological one. It means existing in between, in a space where no country fully claims you. It means learning to answer simple questions—Where are you from?—with answers that never quite satisfy.

I moved through Europe not as a traveler, but as someone waiting—waiting for permission, for paperwork, for a decision that would determine whether I could begin a life or remain suspended outside of one.

When I arrived in Vienna, Austria, by train, it didn’t feel real. I remember looking out the window as the city came into view—orderly streets, unfamiliar buildings, people moving with purpose—and thinking that I was watching a film. Everything felt composed, distant, as if I were observing someone else’s life instead of stepping into my own. I had crossed a border, but I had not yet arrived anywhere.

Time did not move forward in those months—it stalled, stretched, repeated itself.

In Rome, Italy, I stood outside the wrong building, clutching my documents, my face covered with tears, my heart pounding with the knowledge that I might be late for the most important interview of my life—the one that could determine whether I would be allowed to go to America. I had gone to the wrong location of the American Embassy. For a moment, everything narrowed to panic: unfamiliar streets, a language I did not fully command, time slipping away. I remember the disorientation more than the details—the sense that everything could unravel because I did not yet know how to exist in this new world.

There is a particular kind of invisibility that comes with that existence. You are present, but not rooted. Seen, but not recognized. You learn quickly that your story does not fit into easy categories, and so it is often not heard at all.

When I finally arrived in the United States, people spoke of freedom as if it were self-evident. But freedom, to me, was not abstract. It was practical, almost physical—the ability to make choices without fear, to build something without it being taken away, to imagine a future and believe, for the first time, that it might actually happen.

Starting over is not a single moment—it is a long and uneven process. You carry your past with you even as you try to construct something new. You measure progress in small victories others might never notice. You learn to live with the tension between who you were and who you are becoming.

Today, conversations about immigration often reduce people to numbers, policies, or positions. What gets lost is the human reality of dislocation—the quiet, disorienting experience of losing not just a place, but a framework for understanding your own life.

To lose a country is to lose more than geography. It is to lose a version of yourself that only existed in that place. Starting over is not simply an act of rebuilding—it is an act of redefinition.

I didn’t leave my country. I lost it. And everything that followed—every border crossed, every document obtained, every step toward a new life—began from that absence.

During the quiet and uncertain days of the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself looking back — reflecting on the path that brought me here. That reflection became Camel from Kyzylkum, a memoir of my journey through loss, resilience, and the search for belonging.

On a day when the world is shaken by the President of the United States’ alarming statement, “A whole civilization will die tonight,” I would like to share a story of extraordinary humanity from the time of World War II.

I came across this story online and am not aware of its original author. Still, I believe it is important to remind ourselves that even in the darkest times, people are capable of great goodness.

In 1941, the city of Leningrad was surrounded by Nazi forces and cut off from the world.

The Siege of Leningrad would last 872 days—nearly two and a half years.

No food could get in. No supplies. No escape.

It became one of the deadliest sieges in human history. Over one million civilians died, most from starvation.

People ate wallpaper paste for the glue. They boiled leather belts and shoes. They ate rats, cats, dogs. As winter set in and temperatures dropped to -40°F, the city became a frozen graveyard.

Inside a large building in the heart of Leningrad sat the Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry—the world’s first global seed bank, housing 250,000 samples of seeds and plant genetic material.

Wheat. Rice. Corn. Beans. Peanuts. Potatoes. Tons of it. Enough food to feed the entire institute staff for years.

And sitting inside that building, guarding those seeds, were a small group of botanists who were slowly starving to death.

They never touched a single seed.

The seed bank had been created by Nikolai Vavilov, a visionary botanist who had traveled the world collecting samples of nearly every edible plant known to humanity. He understood something most people didn’t in the 1920s and 1930s: genetic diversity was humanity’s insurance policy.

If disease wiped out a crop, if famine struck, if climate changed—these seeds could be used to restart agriculture. They represented the future of human food security.

By 1941, the collection was irreplaceable. The most comprehensive botanical archive on Earth.

Then the siege began.

Vavilov himself wasn’t there—Stalin had arrested him in 1940 for his scientific views. He would die in prison in 1943, starving to death in a Soviet gulag while his life’s work sat in Leningrad.

But his scientists remained. And they understood what the collection meant.

As the siege tightened and starvation spread through the city, the scientists at the institute made a decision: the collection must be preserved at any cost.

They moved the most precious samples into the basement to protect them from German shelling. They cataloged everything meticulously, even as their hands shook from hunger.

And then they sat there, surrounded by food, and slowly died.

The greatest threat wasn’t the bombs. It was the rats.

Thousands of starving rats invaded the building, sensing the massive store of grain. The scientists—weak, skeletal, barely able to stand—took shifts guarding the collection 24 hours a day. They used sticks to fight off rodents, spending their last energy protecting seeds they refused to eat.

Alexander Stchukin was a specialist in oil-bearing plants. He was responsible for the peanut collection—hundreds of packets of rare, high-protein peanuts that could have sustained him for months.

As winter deepened and the siege dragged on, Stchukin’s body began to shut down from malnutrition. His colleagues watched him grow thinner, weaker, his movements slower.

He had died of starvation rather than eat a single one.

Dmitry Ivanov was in charge of the rice collection. Several tons of high-quality rice sat in containers around him as he worked each day, cataloging and protecting the samples.

In total, at least nine scientists at the Vavilov Institute died of starvation during the siege. Some sources suggest the number was higher—possibly as many as 28 staff members.

Each one died surrounded by the very food that could have kept them alive. Wheat. Corn. Beans. Potatoes. Peanuts. Rice.

They could have eaten and survived. They chose not to.

The breaking news cycle moves so fast these days that there’s barely time to absorb anything. On February 8th, we watched the Super Bowl and are still talking about the incredible halftime performance. Yet today, February 11th, we watched in disbelief as Attorney General Pam Bondi appeared before the House Judiciary Committee — a hearing that deserves its own thoughtful examination.

Amid all of this, I happened to come across a beautifully written article by Michael Garrett, Democrat from the North Carolina State Senate. As I read it, my eyes filled with tears — he put into words exactly what I (and perhaps many of you) have been feeling.

I watched Bad Bunny deliver the most American halftime show I have ever seen.

Then I came home and watched it again. And I am not okay. In the best possible way.

He sang every single word in Spanish. Every. Single. Word. He danced through sugarcane fields built on a football field in California while the President of the United States sat somewhere calling it “disgusting.” Lady Gaga came out and did the salsa. Ricky Martin lit up the night. A couple got married on the field. He handed his Grammy, the one he won eight days ago for Album of the Year, to a little boy who looked up at him the way every child looks up when they dare to believe the world has a place for them.

And then this man, this son of a truck driver and a schoolteacher from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, stood on the biggest stage on the planet and said “God bless America.”

And then he started naming them.

Chile. Argentina. Uruguay. Paraguay. Bolivia. Peru. Ecuador. Brazil. Colombia. Venezuela. Panama. Costa Rica. Nicaragua. Honduras. El Salvador. Guatemala. Mexico. Cuba. Dominican Republic. Jamaica. The United States. Canada. And then, his voice breaking with everything he carries, “Mi patria, Puerto Rico. Seguimos aquí.” My homeland, Puerto Rico. We are still here.

The flags came. Every single one of them. Carried across that field by dancers and musicians while the jumbotron lit up with the only words that mattered:

“THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE.”

I teared up. I’m not ashamed to say it. I sat on my couch and I wept because THAT is the America I believe in. That is the American story, not the sanitized, gated, English-only version that small and frightened people try to sell us. The REAL one. The messy, beautiful, multilingual, multicolored, courageous one. The one that has always been built by hands that speak every language and pray in every tongue and come from every corner of this hemisphere.

That is the America I want Jack and Charlotte to know. That when the moment came, when the whole world was watching, a Puerto Rican kid who grew up to become the most-streamed artist on Earth stood in front of 100 million people, sang in his mother’s language, blessed every nation in the Americas, and spiked a football that read “Together, we are America” into the ground. Not with anger. With joy. With love so big it made hate look exactly as small as it is.

And what did the President do? He called it “absolutely terrible.” He said “nobody understands a word this guy is saying.” He called it “a slap in the face to our Country.” The leader of the free world watched a celebration of love, culture, and everything this hemisphere has given to the world, and all he could see was something foreign. Something threatening. Something disgusting.

Let that sink into your bones.

The man who is supposed to represent all of us looked at the flags of our neighbors, heard the language of 500 million Americans across this hemisphere, and felt attacked. That’s not strength. That’s not patriotism. That is poverty of the soul.

And then there was the Turning Point show. Kid Rock in a college arena in North Dakota. Three million viewers watching a man who once wrote a song about liking underage girls perform as the “family-friendly” alternative to a Puerto Rican artist celebrating love. They called it the “All-American Halftime Show”, as if America has a velvet rope. As if this country belongs to some of us and not all of us. As if you need to sing in English to count.

Here’s what I want to say to everyone who posted about that show tonight, who shared it proudly, who turned away from Bad Bunny’s celebration because it was in Spanish and the flags weren’t only red, white, and blue:

Your children will see those posts. Your grandchildren will find them. The internet doesn’t forget. And one day, when the history of this moment is written, when our kids and their kids look back at 2026 the way we look back at the people who stood on the wrong side of every bridge and every march and every moment that mattered, they will know exactly where you stood. They will see who chose Kid Rock over a hemisphere of flags. They will see who called love “disgusting.” And they will carry that knowledge the way all of us carry the knowledge of what our ancestors did when they were tested.

I don’t say that with anger. I say it with sadness. Because hate is an inheritance nobody asks for, and yet it gets passed down just the same.

Bad Bunny didn’t say “ICE out” tonight. He didn’t need to. He just showed the whole world what America looks like when we are not afraid of each other. When culture is shared, not policed. When language is music, not a threat. When a flag from every nation in this hemisphere can walk across a football field together and the only words you need are the ones he gave us:

The only thing more powerful than hate is love.

Over 100 million people saw that tonight.

And no Truth Social post can take it away.

Ten months ago, on March 9, 2025, I shared a post here about ICE detaining a young British woman who was simply backpacking through North America. The public reaction was immediate and intense. Many of us could not believe something like that could happen in our country. It felt unreal.

And yet, just ten months later, we are witnessing scenes that once felt unimaginable. Videos and images coming out of Minneapolis show violence, fear, and people being brought to the ground in plain sight. Americans are being murdered, detained, dehumanized, and stripped of basic due process. The language, the tactics, the atmosphere—it feels disturbingly familiar to those of us who have lived under authoritarian systems.

As someone who was born and lived in the Soviet Union, I never thought I would experience that same sense of dread here. Watching what is happening now makes many of us feel angry, terrified, and heartbreakingly helpless.

Congress has failed to protect people. The courts feel distant. Institutions we trusted seem absent when we need them most.

The question that keeps echoing in my mind is simple and terrifying:

How do we get our country back?

How do 340 million people reclaim their voice when the emergency is already here?

I’m sharing this article below because staying silent feels like surrender.

Please read it. Please stay informed. Please stay politically engaged. Please don’t look away.

This is a national emergency. Trump is off the rails. His ICE and Border Patrol goons are loose on America. The havoc in Minneapolis will worsen and will occur elsewhere. Yesterday, someone else was shot there.

His military is loose on the world. Now Venezuela and the Caribbean, at any moment Iran or Cuba or Greenland. (European nations are at this moment sending troops to Greenland, presumably to defend it from Trump’s America.)

You may feel helpless — a powerless observer of this hurricane of violence and stupidity.

You may be experiencing the kind of despair that immobilizes the brain and numbs the senses.

You may want to scream but can’t find your voice because you’re so shocked and frightened.

Please do not succumb to helplessness, despair, or fear.

You are needed. Desperately.

What more can you do beyond protesting, calling your members of Congress, and (if you can afford to) writing checks to candidates who can flip seats?

Stay politically engaged, but don’t wait for the Democratic Party to get a spine or hope that the Republican Party discovers integrity. We are moving beyond party politics.

Here’s what you can also do: Mobilize your employers, your organizations, and your congregations — anywhere you work, any group of which you’re a member — and get them to use their influence to end this barbarity.

Organize your fellow employees, retirees, alumni, and congregants. Get them to help you pressure trustees, directors, and heads of every major university, professional association, charity, and foundation. Every corporate CEO or managing director. Every religious leader.

Push everyone with any formal authority in this nation to speak with clarity and conviction against what is happening, and to commit themselves and their organizations to ending this scourge.

Help them understand that silence in the face of this catastrophe is complicity. That there is no longer any excuse for them to be “prudently cautious,” no longer any justification for them to wait until “others take the lead.”

The emergency is now.

Help them see that as America slides further into this authoritarian nightmare, their own organizations are on the line. No group is secure. No corporation is immune. There is no place to hide.

You can be a leader by getting the formal leaders of America to exercise their formal leadership and power.

The heads of American corporations and financial institutions need to issue strong rebukes of this regime. Corporations and banks that pride themselves on their responsibilities to the American public have a special role: Patagonia, TOMS, Ben & Jerry’s, Salesforce, Adidas, Microsoft, Google, JPMorgan Chase.

We also need to hear from leaders of America’s great foundations, which, after all, are organized to pursue the public interest: Ford, Rockefeller, Carnegie, Bill and Melinda Gates, J.Paul Getty, Robert Wood Johnson, Kellogg.

We need America’s religious leaders to condemn this brutality: bishops of the Catholic Church, the United Methodist Church, and the General Convention of the Episcopal Church; pastors of the Southern Baptist Convention and National Baptist Convention; president and counselors of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; rabbis in the Central Conference of American Rabbis, Union of Reform Judaism, and the Orthodox Union; imams in the Islamic Society of North America.

We need America’s great nonprofits to loudly repudiate what’s occurring: League of Women Voters, Salvation Army, Common Cause, National Urban League, Public Citizen, Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Hispanic Federation.

Also the American Bar Association, American Medical Association, National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, American Association of University Professors, National Library Association — all must loudly condemn Trump’s lawless reign of terror.

We need every labor union in America and its leadership to denounce what is happening and organize against it.

All must use their voices and their influence in this fight, because no other fight is as crucial at this point in the history of America and the world.

Make them see this. Deliver this message to them: If these organizations and these leaders stand up against what is occurring and use their considerable influence to stop it, history will praise their leadership and courage.

If they fail to do so, history will condemn their cowardice and complicity.

They will be total, permanent, and devastating.

The first domino to fall is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization itself. NATO is built on the sacred promise of Article 5, that an attack on one is an attack on all. If the U.S. attacks Denmark, we are not just breaking the treaty; we are triggering it against ourselves. NATO dissolves instantly. The alliance that kept the peace in Europe for 75 years evaporates, leaving the continent to rearm and realign against the new aggressor across the Atlantic. We don’t just lose an ally; we create a unified enemy.

The military repercussions will be swift and humiliating. Europe will immediately demand the closure of every U.S. military base on the continent. Ramstein in Germany, Aviano in Italy, Lakenheath in the UK, all gone. Our ability to project power into the Middle East and Africa vanishes overnight. We will be evicted from the very soil we helped liberate and defended for decades, forced to retreat to our own shores as a fortress nation, isolated and friendless.

Then comes the economic nuclear option. The European Union is the largest single market in the world, and they will weaponize it. Europe will likely move to call in U.S. debt and dump their dollar reserves, sending the value of our currency into a death spiral. The U.S. economy, which relies on the dollar being the global reserve currency, will collapse. Inflation will make the post-COVID spikes look like a rounding error. Your savings will be worthless before the ink dries on the invasion orders.

Corporate America will face an extinction event. U.S. companies will be expelled from the European market. Apple, Google, McDonald’s, and Tesla will see their assets seized or their operations banned. Trillions of dollars in market capitalization will be incinerated in minutes. The stock market will not just crash; it will close. We are talking about the complete de-globalization of American industry, cutting us off from the wealthiest consumers on the planet.

The skies will go silent. European aviation authorities will almost certainly ground all Boeing jets and ban U.S. airlines from their airspace. Transatlantic travel will cease. If you are in Paris or Berlin, you are stuck there. The logistical arteries that feed our supply chains will be severed. We will be cut off from European medicine, machinery, and technology. We will be an island nation in the worst possible sense.

The cultural isolation will be just as stinging. The International Olympic Committee and FIFA will have no choice but to bar the United States from competition, just as they did with Russia. There will be no World Cup matches in New Jersey. There will be no Team USA in the Olympics. We will be treated as a pariah state, unwelcome on the global stage, forced to watch the world celebrate without us.

For individual Americans, the consequences will be personal and painful. Visa-free travel to Europe will end immediately. Americans currently living or working in Europe will lose their legal protections and residency status. They will become persona non grata, potentially facing deportation or internment. The “blue passport” that used to open every door will suddenly be a red flag at every border crossing.

This is the end of trust, and it does not reset. You cannot invade a democratic ally and then say “my bad” four years later. The psychological break will be permanent. Europe will realize that the United States is no longer a partner but a predator. They will build their own defense architecture, their own financial systems, and their own alliances that specifically exclude us. The West will continue, but the United States will no longer be part of it.

Invading Greenland is not a show of strength; it is an act of national suicide. We are trading our reputation, our economy, and our security for a frozen island and a handful of minerals we can’t even process. The price of this real estate deal is everything we built over the last century. If we cross this line, there is no going back. We will be the lonely superpower, ruling over nothing but our own decline.

The insanity emerging from the United States right now is terrifying.

Every morning I wake up wondering what awful breaking news we will hear that day. But today’s news made me especially angry and sad.

The cruelty of the current regime; the murder of an innocent American citizen in Minneapolis; the lies of officials responsible for it, calling it an “act of domestic terrorism”; the jaw-dropping video we all watched in disbelief.

Today they murdered a 37-year-old woman. A few days ago, they attacked Venezuela, abducted its president and his wife, who later appeared in a New York courtroom with visible signs of beating and bruises on her face. And yesterday, as we marked the five-year anniversary of the insurrection and the attack on our Capitol, the official government website portrayed the mob of insurrectionists as “patriotic Americans”.

My head is spinning, and I am struggling to process all of this.

This is not a moment for irony or detachment. It is a moment that demands careful attention, accountability, and action—before the consequences become irreversible.

The woman murdered by ICE has been identified as Renee Good, age 37.

She leaves behind a young son whose father passed away a few years ago.

“There’s nobody else in his life,” Timmy Ray Macklin Sr., the boy’s grandfather, told the Minneapolis Star. “I’ll drive. I’ll fly. To come get my grandchild.”

Her mother swears she wasn’t involved in any protesting.

“Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” she said. “She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

Renee will be missed, and may she rest in peace. Justice must be served against her killer - and against all the people responsible for siccing these goons on innocent people.

Yes, during her arraignment in a New York courtroom on Monday, January 5, 2026, Cilia Flores, the wife of Nicolás Maduro, appeared with visible injuries, including bandages on her face. Her attorney claimed she suffered “significant injuries,” including possible fractured ribs and severe bruising, during her capture by U.S. forces in Caracas over the weekend.

Now you know!

And there you have it: in a rambling speech in which he jumped from topic to topic, danced, and appeared to mimic someone doing something either stupid or obscene, Trump explained the ideology behind his actions.

Trump didn’t suddenly wake up wanting to “liberate” Venezuela; he’s cashing in on a years‑old Kremlin idea that the U.S. could be “given” Caracas in exchange for looking the other way on Ukraine.

“We’ll run the country and make a lot of money from the oil” isn’t foreign policy, it’s a foreclosure notice. Trump is finally acting on the old Moscow daydream where Washington gets Venezuela and Putin gets Ukraine — and somehow we’re supposed to pretend that bombing Caracas is about democracy, not a loyalty test to his favorite autocrat.

I spent half my life living and working in the Soviet Union, before walking away from everything I knew, traveling through Europe as a stateless refugee, and eventually rebuilding my life from the ground up in the United States. A few years ago, I paused to look back on my life and chronicled my entire journey in my memoir Camel from Kyzylkum.

In the Soviet Union, we all knew about the Gulag—an immense machinery of fear and punishment. It wasn’t just history; it was a system of terror that shaped how people thought, behaved, and survived.

The Soviet Gulag system was one of the darkest engines of oppression in the 20th century—a vast network of forced-labor camps designed to break human bodies and human spirit alike. Millions were swallowed by this system: political dissidents, intellectuals, ordinary workers, entire families. Many never returned.

What made the Gulag especially horrifying was not only the brutality of the labor and the starvation-level conditions, but the way it turned cruelty into bureaucracy. A life could vanish with a forged accusation or a whispered complaint. Survival depended on luck as much as strength.

The Gulag stands as a chilling symbol of Soviet totalitarianism and the regime’s willingness to sacrifice millions of lives for political control and economic gain. Its legacy of state-sponsored terror continues to haunt Eastern Europe and the world.

While the Soviet Gulag system was officially dismantled, its legacy never disappeared. Modern Russian penal colonies often stand on the same sites, rely on forced labor for economic gain, and hold a growing number of political prisoners. Many observers now describe this reality as a “Gulag 2.0” — a revival of the forced-labor camp model amid rising political repression and an intensified effort to control historical memory.

Remembering the Gulag matters—not as distant history, but as a warning. Systems built on fear, dehumanization, and unchecked power can rise anywhere. And they always begin with small justifications, small persecutions, small erosions of truth.

Memory is our defense. Silence is the danger.

The U.S. detention sites as Alligator Alcatraz and Krome North Service Processing Center will be vindicated by History the same way as Gulag did.

Amnesty International’s new report on the U.S. detention sites Alligator Alcatraz and Krome is a warning flare for every American who believes in the Constitution, the rule of law, and the basic dignity of human beings.

We’ve seen governmental cruelty before in our history, but these facilities mark a new level of calculated dehumanization on U.S. soil, and Amnesty is calling it what it is: torture, enforced disappearance, and a deliberate system designed to break people.

What makes this report so chilling isn’t just the details, although they’re horrifying enough. It’s that the government has begun giving these places cute, theme-park-style nicknames like “Alligator Alcatraz” and “Cornhusker Clink,” as if they’re attractions instead of concentration-camp-style black sites.

Authoritarian regimes always begin by softening the language, making the abuses sound like logistics, law enforcement, or processing rather than cruelty. If you want to condition the public to accept state violence, you start with euphemisms.

Investigators found people packed into filthy tents and trailers where toilets overflowed onto the floors and into sleeping areas. Water was sometimes rationed. Food quality was lousy. Insects swarmed at all hours. Lights were left on day and night. Cameras reportedly pointed at showers and toilets, in clear violation of privacy and human dignity.

This wasn’t an accident. These were choices.

The so-called “box” at the Florida concentration camp may be the most grotesque example. It’s a two-by-two-foot outdoor metal cage where detainees, shackled and already vulnerable, were left in blistering Florida heat, exposed to mosquitos and biting flies, denied water, and forced to endure punishment sessions lasting up to 24 hours.

These are exactly the kinds of stress-position torture techniques our nation once condemned when used by dictatorships abroad. Today they’re being used in our name, by our government, on our soil.

At Krome, Amnesty documented prolonged solitary confinement, routine shackling even during medical transport, denial of legal access, and a pervasive system of intimidation and retaliation. Medical care was often delayed or unavailable. People needing lawyers were blocked from communicating with them.

This is not a “processing system”: it’s a punishment regime. It’s brutality done with your and my tax dollars and in our names.

The report makes clear that these are not isolated violations: they’re the design.

This administration has woven cruelty into policy, permitting state-run detention networks to operate as if constitutional rights simply evaporate when you cross a razor-wire perimeter.

The crisis for American democracy isn’t just that the camps exist; it’s that they’re being normalized, bureaucratized, branded, and replicated. Amnesty warns that DHS is already planning more such sites, using “emergency” authorities and no-bid contracts to create an extrajudicial detention network beyond the reach of meaningful oversight.

This is exactly how authoritarian systems evolve. They never begin with political opponents: instead, they begin with people the majority already sees as powerless. Immigrants. Refugees. The poor. Non-citizens. Those without family or money or social standing.

When the public tolerates a government treating one group of human beings as disposable, that system is inevitably expanded to inflict that same treatment on others — dissidents, politicians, people like you and me — whenever it becomes politically useful.

We’ve seen this in nation after nation that slid from democracy into authoritarianism. The first victims are always those considered “outsiders” or “threats to the order” the regime promised to maintain.

Once the public is desensitized to cages, beatings, disappearances, and secret courts, it becomes frighteningly easy to redirect those same tactics toward dissidents, journalists, labor leaders, activists, and political opponents.

This Amnesty International report isn’t just a humanitarian alarm bell: it’s a constitutional one.

When due process is suspended for one class of people, it’s suspended in principle for all. When the government can hide detainees in swamp camps with no legal representation, it’s already established the machinery necessary to detain anyone it wants to silence. When the public is conditioned to see cages and brutality and think “this is fine,” the moral system of a nation starts to collapse.

We forget that the Constitution doesn’t protect itself; it’s protected by norms, culture, public outrage, legal oversight, and a shared belief that the state doesn’t get to brutalize human beings no matter who they are.

When those norms erode, when brutality becomes invisible-but-known or acceptable, authoritarianism doesn’t arrive with a drumbeat. It arrives quietly. It arrives bureaucratically. It arrives through “temporary measures” and “emergency facilities” and “processing centers” set up for “those people over there.”

Amnesty is demanding the immediate closure of Alligator Alcatraz and any similar state-run black sites. They call for an end to emergency-authorized detention, a prohibition on outdoor punitive confinement, the restoration of access to legal counsel, real medical care, due process, judicial oversight, and a halt to no-bid construction of new concentration camps in America.

These aren’t radical demands. They’re the bare minimum for a nation that claims to believe in the rule of law.

Because if we let our government continue to create a network of secretive, cruel, extrajudicial detention facilities for one set of powerless people today, tomorrow it will inevitably turn those same systems against anyone who challenges their power.

That is how every authoritarian regime in history has done it.

And unless we stop it now, it’s how this one will, too.

The Babson College student who Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported to Honduras after she tried to fly to visit her parents for Thanksgiving is speaking out about her ordeal.

Any Lucia López Belloza, a 19-year-old first-year student attending the Massachusetts school on a scholarship, never imagined she would be sent back to the country she left as a 7-year-old child, she told MS NOW senior political and national reporter Jacob Soboroff in an interview on Wednesday. While she described herself as “really aware” of the mass deportations that have been unfolding nationwide during President Donald Trump’s second term, she said she “never thought that it was going to happen to me.”

López Belloza, who is currently staying with her grandparents in northern Honduras, said that she was preparing for finals prior to her Nov. 20 deportation. “My life, it was just mainly to focus on my studies,” she said.

That changed soon after she arrived at Boston Logan Airport a week before Thanksgiving, with the plan to fly to Texas, where her father works as a tailor. López Belloza came to the country with both of her parents as a child and was targeted as part of the Trump administration’s increasingly aggressive deportation efforts aimed at both illegal and legal immigrants. She was raised in Texas.

When it was her turn to have her boarding pass scanned at the airport gate, she was directed to the customer service counter, where two ICE agents were waiting for her, she told Soboroff.

“They were like, ‘Any, right’?” López Belloza recounted. “I was like, ‘yes.’ They were like, ‘OK, you’re going to come with us because you’re going to have to sign a bunch of paperwork.’”

When she told the agents she had to board her flight, she said they replied, “Oh, you’re not even gonna be on that plane.”

“That’s where it kind of hit me — this was ICE,” she said.

The agents did not tell López Belloza that there were plans for her deportation, she said. After they detained her, she told them she was planning to fly to Texas to see her parents, she said.

In ICE custody, López Belloza was transferred to Texas the following day — the same day a federal judge signed a court order mandating she be kept in the country while her case was pending. Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin has said that López Belloza had a deportation order stemming from a decade ago, adding that she “received full due process” with regard to her recent removal. A spokesperson for ICE did not respond to questions from MS NOW on Wednesday night.

López Belloza’s lawyer, Todd Pomerleau, told The New York Times on Sunday that she was “completely unaware” of the alleged deportation order and that he is skeptical it even exists. López Belloza also told Soboroff she did not know about the alleged order.

On Nov. 22, López Belloza was shackled, handcuffed and deported to Honduras. “It felt like if I was a criminal when I’m not,” she told Soboroff of that experience. “And it just felt really awful … not only seeing me, but seeing a bunch of us being treated like that, being treated like criminals.”

When she arrived in Honduras, at her grandparents’ home, López Belloza was finally able to call her parents. Through tears, she told Soboroff what she said to her mother on that call: “Mom, I got deported, I’m here.” Her mother tried to comfort her, she said: “She was just like, ‘It’s OK. We already knew. We found out; everything’s gonna be fine.’”

Of Trump’s claims that he is deporting “criminals” and “the worst of the worst,” López Belloza said: “Not all of us are criminals. … Many of us want to just work and provide for their families. We are here also to go to college, because we want a better education. We just want a better kind of lifestyle. But not all of us are criminals, and he says that all of us are criminals. He’s extremely wrong because many of us just want a better life with an education, a job.”

“The president was elected based on his promise to carry out the largest mass deportation operation in history. As the administration continues arresting and deporting illegal aliens with additional criminal charges, anyone illegally present in the United States is eligible for deportation,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told MS NOW in response.

The dream she and her parents shared before her story became a national headline, López Belloza said, “was for me to be able to go to a university, and not only that, but a university that will give me really good financial aid, because we’re not a rich family.”

They are not giving up on that hope.

“My hopes for the future is to, first, see my family, be able to hug them, and also to be able to finish my college,” she told Soboroff. A Babson College official has told the school community that faculty and staff are focused on “supporting [López Belloza] and their family, as well as the well-being of our community.”

After graduating, López Belloza added, she wants to fulfill her “dream” of opening a business “and try to live a better life.”

But whether she can do that in the U.S. remains to be seen.
