Passions and pastimes
My favorite things to do.
I love to travel and share my experiences through video stories on YouTube (@lgelya).
I believe travel is the only thing that makes you richer for the money spent.
Recently, we explored four beautiful islands in Hawaii, and I’m excited to share one of our adventures from Maui—a place of stunning coastlines, lush valleys, and deep cultural roots:
Last year, we went on a Mediterranean Odyssey — Venice in Italy and Corfu in Greece were among my absolute favorite places we visited:
We visited Mont Saint-Michel island in Normandy, France in May of 2023, during our British Isles cruise.
Le Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island, there is water all around the island that made it hard for attackers to penetrate. In 966, a community of Benedictines established itself and built the first church. Referred to as 'The Wonder of the Western World', the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel is a magnificent example of gothic architecture from the early 13th century:
In November 2022, we experienced the unforgettable wonders of the ancient treasures of Egypt:
In August 2023, we had the joy of visiting one of America's national jewels—Mackinac Island, nestled in the heart of Lake Huron. It was a real discovery for me—a place that feels like stepping back in time.
What makes Mackinac Island so unique is that no cars are allowed. Instead, you’ll find horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, and charming footpaths winding through a town that buzzes with life during the summer season. The pace is slower, the air cleaner, and the atmosphere filled with an old-world charm that’s hard to find elsewhere.
One of the highlights of our visit was having lunch at the historic Grand Hotel—a truly elegant and memorable experience. From the sweeping porch views to the timeless decor, it felt like we were dining in another era.
It’s places like this that remind me how much beauty and wonder still exist close to home:
And the everyday beauty that surrounds us here in our home state of Florida:
I could talk about our travels forever—but there’s just not enough space here to fit it all!

Traveling to Rhode Island in December 2024.
In early December 2024, we took a tour of Rhode Island, the smallest state in the union, yet one of the most densely populated and heavily industrialized for its size. Thanks for reading Lara’s Substack! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.
But travel is only one part of my life story. I’m also the author of a deeply personal memoir, Camel from Kyzylkum ( laragelya.com )
What sets this book apart is its honest portrayal of life under Soviet rule—the quiet oppression, the emotional silence, and the enduring hope of escaping to freedom.
The Kyzylkum Desert becomes both a real and symbolic landscape, reflecting the harshness of exile and the unrelenting thirst for a new beginning.
I invite you to read my post, Refugee Journey:
Refugee Journey
No other nation has an immigrant population as large as that of the United States. With the important exception of those descended from Native peoples and enslaved Africans, nearly everyone in this country can trace at least part of their ancestry to immigrants—whether they arrived recently or generations ago.
Deep down, I’ve always believed—and still do—that Camel from Kyzylkum will one day become a movie. Maybe not in my lifetime, but I’m certain it will happen.
And what about you, dear friends? What are your passions and favorite pastimes?
I’d love to hear—don’t hesitate to share!
I truly value connecting with like-minded people who are passionate about storytelling, resilience, history, and the human journey.
